Overseas FX Leverage Regulation: How It Differs From Japan's 25x Limit, and Maximums by Broker

Wondering why overseas FX offers 1000x or 2000x leverage when domestic FX in Japan stops at 25x?

The Financial Services Agency of Japan explains that individuals trading over-the-counter FX in Japan must post margin of at least 4% of the trade amount. That works out to leverage of 25x or less. Overseas brokers' limits vary by regulator, account type, balance and more.

This article lets you check how it differs from the domestic rule and the maximum leverage at supported brokers. It also covers cautions about high leverage.

In short: 25x at most in Japan, while overseas limits vary by broker and conditions

  • For individuals trading over-the-counter FX in Japan, margin of at least 4% (leverage of 25x or less) is required (Financial Services Agency of Japan)
  • Overseas brokers' limits vary by regulator, account type, balance and other conditions
  • The maximum at XB's 5 supported brokers is 1:1000 to 1:2000 (unlimited under some conditions at some)
  • High leverage also magnifies losses. Check the stop-out level and your margin

What Japan's domestic FX leverage regulation (25x) says

The Financial Services Agency of Japan explains that when individuals trade over-the-counter FX, they must post and maintain margin of at least 4% of the trade amount, regardless of the currency pair.

Converted to leverage, that is 25x or less. The FSA published this margin rule in 2009 as a proposed amendment to the Cabinet Office Ordinance on Financial Instruments Business.

The FSA states that even brokers licensed overseas are prohibited from conducting business aimed at residents of Japan without being registered in Japan. Please also check the FSA's warnings before trading.

How required margin differs by leverage

A simple example based on a notional value of ¥15,000,000 for 1 lot (100,000 units). It changes with the account currency and the broker's calculation method.
LeverageMargin rateRequired margin (USDJPY at 150, 1 lot)
25x4%¥600,000
1000x0.1%¥15,000
2000x0.05%¥7,500

Why overseas limits vary by regulator and account balance

Overseas brokers follow the rules of the regulator in the country or region where they are based. As a result, limits can differ by regulator, account type and balance.

  • The applicable entity name shown on the registration screen
  • Maximum leverage for each account type
  • Whether the limit steps down as your balance or equity grows
  • Limits that differ by instrument, such as FX, gold and CFDs

1000x is 40 times the domestic limit, and 2000x is 80 times. HFM's KATANA account is described as unlimited*, and the Top-Up Bonus account as up to 1:1000*. Exness's unlimited leverage applies only when conditions are met.

Cautions on high leverage (stop-out and margin)

  • On USDJPY, 1 lot (100,000 units) moves about ¥100,000 in profit or loss for every ¥1 the price moves
  • Even if required margin is small, your margin level falls as unrealized losses grow
  • Stop-out levels differ by broker (Exness is 0%, HFM is 20% and KATANA is 0%)
  • Around economic releases and weekend gaps, execution can slip and stop-outs can be delayed

What matters more than a high multiple is choosing a lot size that suits your funds. For how losses work, also see the zero-cut article.

How leverage relates to cashback

Cashback is calculated from trading volume (lots), not from the leverage multiple. The cashback amounts will be posted on each broker page at launch.

We do not recommend holding lots that are too large for your funds in order to earn more cashback. Losses can exceed the cashback.
