Overseas FX Tax Return Guide for Japan Residents: Documents and Steps

Not sure what to prepare or how to file a tax return for overseas FX? This guide is written for Japan tax residents.
The key is to gather a full year of trade records early and then build your return in the National Tax Agency of Japan's online filing portal. Deciding the tax category should always be confirmed with a tax accountant or the tax office.
For how the tax rules work, see our separate article. This article focuses on the filing process and preparation.
Summary: Start by gathering a full year of trade records
- Export your MT4/MT5 trade history for the whole year
- Keep dates and amounts for deposits, withdrawals, and cashback
- You can create your return in the National Tax Agency's online filing portal
- Do not assume the tax category or calculation; confirm with a tax accountant or the tax office
Preparing for your return and the annual trade report
Overseas brokers may not issue an annual trade report automatically, as domestic brokers do. In that case, you build your own annual report from your MT4/MT5 history.
| What to prepare | Details | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Trade history | Export your MT4/MT5 account history for a set period | Save one year at a time, January 1 to December 31 |
| Deposit and withdrawal records | Deposit and withdrawal amounts and dates | Save the history from your client area |
| Fee and cost records | Trading fees, withdrawal fees, etc. | Keep anything with a receipt or statement |
| Cashback records | Credit date and amount | Save the relevant rows from your account history |
How to export your MT4/MT5 history
- 1
Open Account History in the terminal
Select the Account History tab at the bottom of MT4/MT5.
- 2
Set a custom period
Specify January 1 to December 31 of the target year.
- 3
Save it as a report
Right-click and choose the option to save the report.
- 4
Save each account separately
If you have several accounts, keep separate files with distinct names.
Screen and menu names may differ slightly by version and environment. If yours look different, check your broker's help pages.
How to total your cashback
Auto-rebate credits are recorded in your trading account history. Pull them from the history and add up the yearly total.
- Extract the cashback credit rows from your account history
- Put the credit date, amount, and account number in a spreadsheet
- If your account currency is USD, ask a tax accountant how to convert it to yen
- Keep them in a separate column so they do not mix with trading profit and loss rows
